Carter's statement came hours after Georgia's Republican-controlled Senate <a href="//www.commondreams.org/news/2021/03/09/jim-crow-suit-and-tie-georgia-senate-approves-massive-assault-voting-rights" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">passed</a> by a party-line vote <a href="//www.ajc.com/politics/georgia-senate-votes-to-eliminate-no-excuse-absentee-voting/NGQOBV6XB5GGDCCNLTAJFQIDJI/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">S.B. 241</a>, legislation that would eliminate no-excuse absentee voting and implement draconian voter identification requirements. Fair Fight Action, a voting rights organization, <a href="//twitter.com/fairfightaction/status/1369052621273784321" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">called</a> S.B. 241 "one of the worst voter suppression bills in the country."

The bill's passage followed the Georgia House of Representatives' approval last week of a separate measure which, as Ari Berman of <em>Mother Jones</em> <a href="//www.motherjones.com/politics/2021/03/georgia-republicans-pass-the-most-restrictive-voting-laws-since-jim-crow/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">summarized</a>, "cuts weekend voting days—including on Sundays, when Black churches hold 'Souls to the Polls' get-out-the-vote drives—restricts the use of mail ballot drop boxes, prevents counties from accepting grants from nonprofits to improve their elections, adds new voter ID requirements for mail ballots, gives election official less time to send out mail ballots and voters less time to return them, and even makes it a crime to distribute food and water to voters waiting in line."

The GOP-dominated Georgia Legislature's latest sweeping assault on voting rights began shortly after President Joe Biden narrowly won the state in November and Democratic Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff emerged victorious in <a href="//www.commondreams.org/news/2021/01/06/progressive-push-2000-checks-georgia-shows-bold-universal-policies-winning-strategy" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">January runoffs</a>, handing the Democratic Party control of the U.S. Senate.

"In the 16 years since the report's release, vote-by-mail practices have progressed significantly as new technologies have been developed. In light of these advances, I believe that voting by mail can be conducted in a manner that ensures election integrity."</p><p>Pointing to his post-White House experience observing 113 elections in 39 countries around the world, Carter said that "while states must safeguard the integrity of the election process to prevent fraud, this should not be at the expense of voters' access to the polls."</p><p>"American democracy means every eligible person has the right to vote in an election that is fair, open, and secure," said Carter. "It should be flexible enough to meet the electorate's changing needs. As Georgians, we must protect these values. We must not lose the progress we have made. We must not promote confidence among one segment of the electorate by restricting the participation of others. Graham told Axios that he wants to try and find the good parts of Trumpism and lift those up and keep the "dark side" away. </p><p>"That's their best hope, someone who could destroy something that they've spent their lives as a part of," said Wallace. </p><p>Politico reporter Eugene Daniels highlighted how Graham has evolved over the course of his relationship with Trump. </p><p>"It's a gamble. It is a huge gamble, right? It's not the type of loyalty that President Trump will give back, and it's the kind of loyalty that he's always demanded. He's someone who says, 'just trust me, follow me, I'm not going to tell you where we're going.' And he's not going to give that back, and so Graham seems like he's spent the last four and a half years kind of explaining away President Trump's worst instincts and he can't go back now, right? He can't go back to the person who was saying that President Trump shouldn't be the nominee of the party. He has to continue forward."</p><p>When there are people like Graham willing to follow Trump, Daniels said that Republicans are aware that it's a dangerous deal to make. Trump is already planning his revenge tour where he can trash Republicans who refused to support him and try and bring them down.
